Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the importance of strict compliance with town planning and urban development laws to ensure a safe, secure, and flood-free environment.

During a visit from the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Governor Oborevwori acknowledged the timely theme of the conference, which focused on planning Nigerian settlements for climate change adaptation and flood resilience.

He highlighted the critical role of town planning in preventing flooding in urban centers and communities, particularly addressing the issue of indiscriminate construction on waterways.

Governor Oborevwori noted that Delta State, being a coastal state, faces challenges related to erosion and flooding. However, significant progress has been made in addressing flooding in Asaba through storm drainage projects, while ongoing work is being done in Warri.

The Governor expressed concern about structures built on waterways, emphasizing that any structure impeding the flow of water would be demolished.

He urged town planners to visit project sites and ensure the suitability of the environment for building approvals.

Governor Oborevwori stressed that the cooperation and strong partnership of regulatory officials and the public are essential in creating a safe, secure, and flood-free environment.
