…NLC cautions, kicks against action
By Pat PA Okon
The Bauchi State Government has suspended all Local Government Education Secretaries, their treasurers and directors of Primary Healthcare in the 20 Local Government Areas of the State.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Ladan Salihu, disclosed this over the weekend in a press statement, he noted that the suspension was with immediate effect. He also said that the move was part of efforts to ensure sanity in the payment of workers salaries
According to the statement, he said that 41,000 civil servants on the payroll of the State do not have their account numbers linked to their Bank Verification Number (BVN). He noted that the figure represented about 40 per cent of the State workforce - of 101,199.
“The total number of staff on the State and Local Government payroll is 83,885, there are 17,314 pensioners under the State and Local Government making 101,199 on the payroll".
“The affected officers are to handover the affairs of their offices to their immediate subordinates, as their suspension is to ensure that the ongoing investigation in the payment of workers salaries is not compromised”, he said.
Ladan said that the State Government has directed that salaries for the 41,488 names on the payroll without BVN be warehoused by the State’s Accountant General pending further investigation.
Reacting to the suspension, the organised labour in the State has cautioned the State Government against “actions that can negate the cordial relationship between workers and the present administration”.
Vice Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the State, Comrade Dauda Shu’aibu, in an emergency press briefing expressed dismay over the suspension of workers in an attempt to confirm the status of workers who have no BVN.
NLC therefore called on the State Government to immediately withdraw the suspension for industrial harmony. He also called on the affected workers to remain calm and wait for further directive from the organised labour.
