North East: Governor Fintiri Reiterates Support To Peace Building Initiatives
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State says he's committed to ensuring enduring peace in Nigeria's northeast region.
Governor Fintiri was speaking at the 4th Board meeting of the United Nations Development Programme Regional Stabilisation Facility Nigeria Window Agenda held at the UN House, Abuja on Thursday.
Governor Fintiri who commended UNDP and donor countries for support to the region ravaged by insurgency, promised to key into their efforts aimed at restoring peace in the North East.
"I will continue to stand for the peace and unity of the region". He said.
The Governor reiterated the importance of peace as a vehicle of development, urging the donor nations to ensure they sustain their collective effort towards restoring lasting peace in the northeast.
While commending UNDP and the international community for their push to ensure a safer world despite the contemporary challenges of COVID-19, he restated his Government's commitment to maintaining the facilities provided by them in the northern part of the State ravaged by insurgency.
He urged Regional Stabilisation Facility programme to intervene in areas such as the Sukur World Heritage Site which is a tourist attraction lying waste due to the activities of insurgents and extend support also to power facilities destroyed by them.
On the part of Government, he said contracts have been awarded towards rebuilding the area beside other facilities provided that have been occupied and are functional.
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum who addressed the meeting via Zoom had also commended the parties for intervention funds to ensure socio-economic activities pick up in the region.
The Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni was represented at the meeting.
Earlier in his welcome address, Mohammed Yahya, Resident Representative, UNDP Nigeria noted that since the launch of the RSF in 2019, the facility has been implementing interventions to provide security, essential services and livelihood opportunities to selected target communities in the northeast. He commended the Governors and the federal Government for providing massive infrastructural development in Schools and other critical sectors and for providing leadership.
There were presentations from the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, Mr Edward Kallon UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and the Ambassadors of Germany, British High Commissioner to Nigeria and other representatives of heads of Missions in Nigeria.
