Governor Fintiri Launches 454 Houses For IDPs At Labondo
Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, joyously launched 454 houses as part of the Labondo Local Integration Project, designed to provide shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state.
The housing units were constructed through the collaborative efforts of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the Central Emergency Fund (CERF), the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), and other partners.
During the launching ceremony held in Labondo today, June 27, 2023, at Girei Local Government Area, Governor Fintiri emphasized the quality, strength, and durability of the houses, assuring that they were built to withstand the test of time.
He highlighted the project’s holistic nature, which not only includes housing but also focuses on enhancing education and healthcare, among other problems addressed by his administration.
The Governor thanked the development partners for their unwavering commitment, perseverance, and dedication to the successful completion of the Labondo Project.
He urged the approximately 2700 beneficiaries of the houses and other initiatives to adopt a culture of proper maintenance and upkeep in order to maintain the project’s long-term viability and the sustainability of the project.
Fintiri commended the project's emphasis on community empowerment, sustainable housing, livelihood support, and socioeconomic development. He emphasized that, while IDPs and returnees are the primary beneficiaries, the project also caters to the host community, encouraging social harmony.
Governor Fintiri highlighted the state's history of sheltering IDPs and returnees from the Northeast sub-region afflicted by insurgency and conflicts, as well as persons returning from bordering countries such as Cameroon.
He urged all citizens to commit themselves to peaceful coexistence, the security of lives and property, and to support those affected by violent confrontations.
In her remarks, Chansa Kapaya, the UNHCR Country Representative, expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for his leadership in the project, and she highlighted that local authorities and communities played a vital role in the project's implementation.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Mustafa, the district head of Girei, and other speakers praised the development partners’ efforts and urged the beneficiaries to take full ownership of the project.
Governor Fintiri's commitment to providing sustainable housing solutions for IDPs and promoting community empowerment displays his dedication to bettering the lives of Adamawa State residents.
The Labondo Project is a tribute to the combined efforts of numerous stakeholders in tackling the issues faced by IDPs and fostering social integration.
