I WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT SPORTS IN BAYELSA AFTER MY TENURE. - Gov. Dickson



- Announced employment of sports personnel and higher educational scholarships for deserving athletes.

The 3rd edition of the Governor Dickson National Wrestling classics held today, a few days after the draws for the 2nd Seriake Dickson Soccer tournament took place.

The week long tournament which commenced on Monday, 24th of June at the Samson Siasia stadium Yenagoa, hosted over 500 athletes, sports personalities, sports lovers, African and West-African wrestling champions from over twenty six states of the federation.

Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State, who amongst many other feats has invested massively in sports, which has positively impacted on the sports culture in the state.

A few of these achievements are the establishment of the first ever sports academy in Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa, the total overhaul and reconstruction of the Sampson Siasia stadium to international standard, the construction of a world class gymnasium for wrestling, construction of a world class golf course, the construction of the Bayelsa Polo club, and many others. 

In his remark, Governor Dickson while commending all the participating athletes for putting up a brilliant performance, thanked the organisers of the wrestling classic for their consistency and commitment to sports development in the state. He also used the opportunity to appreciate the Sports Federation of Nigeria for adopting the tournament as the premier wrestling event in the country.

He stressed that upon assumption of office, the administration met a struggling sports sector despite its huge potentials.

The Governor however expressed delight at the massive progress the sector has witnessed in the past seven years. In his words, 'we have invested massively in sports infrastructure, personnel and our contestants. As you know, we are currently the undisputed champions of the Nigeria  Female Milo Basketball Tournament having won that competition six consecutive times, our football team won a Bronze medal in Cape Verde, we have won medals in wrestling and other events.

We have exported some of our athletes who are currently on scholarship in the United States of America and other European nations for their outstanding performances in previously held competitions

'We have laid the foundation and what is required now is for this to be built upon'. I will however continue to contribute to sporting development when I leave office because I have seen the benefits to the youths of Bayelsa.

The governor charged all the athletes at wrestling classic to always aim for gold as Bayelsa State is a state of champions and winners.

The Gov. Dickson National Wrestling classics is about participation, talent discovery and development.

The governor frowned at the behaviour of some youths who have chosen the path of drug addiction, cultism, kidnapping and political thuggery, stressing that these were destructive. He encouraged all to deploy their talents productively by engaging in sports.

In his closing remark, the Governor directed the Ministry of Sports to source and recruit yearly, sportsmen and women for employment, the first hundred who will be employed in a months time.

The Governor also announced and authorised educational  scholarships into the various higher institutions in the state for deserving state athletes.
