SECURITY: GOVERNOR MATAWALLE SEEKS FORMER HEAD OF STATE, YAKUBU GOWON'S EXPERT ADVICE AGAINST BANDITRY IN ZAMFARA STATE

Governor of Zamfara State, Hon (Dr) Bello Mohammed Matawalle has sought for the expert advice of the former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, on the best ways to end armed banditry and other security challenges facing the State.


The Governor made the request when the elder statesman visited him at the Government House, Gusau.

Governor Matawalle said his government is passionately and urgently seeking the advice of elder statesmen and of Gowon's calibre as he was able to manage Nigeria during Civil War.

The Governor added that "with your experience and expertise in security, we are asking for your advice on how best to end the security challenges facing our dear State”. He added.

He further said that tapping from the wealth of the Gowon's experience as a former Army General and Head of State who fought for the corporate existence of the country will assist his administration positively on security intelligence and intervention.

Matawalle maintained that Nigeria now needs more of his personality with the current situation of banditry, kidnapping and other heinous crimes in order to advice current leaders in handling the terrible situation.

Describing the former head of state's regime as the most challenging and how he overcame the security challenges which were followed by lots of developmental program that had direct bearing on the common man, Matawalle noted that the UDOJI program assisted positively in stabilizing the nation and reducing crime.
On his government’s efforts to ending the menace of armed banditry, the Governor informed the leader that his administration has adopted various methods that include reconciliation which have started to yield positive results as over 216 AK47 rifles have been surrendered to the authorities by repentant bandits under two months.

Governor Matawalle also thanked the elder statesman for the timely visit and assured of his government's readiness to use the articulated advice for the betterment of the State and the Nation in general.

Earlier in his speech, Gen. Gowon said he was in the State for the Northwest Zonal Prayer Rally which is a prayer mission to pray for the governors of Northwest for God's wisdom and blessings in their Governance.

He added that the prayer is organized by the Nigeria Prays which he chairs.
General Gowon who said Nigeria is a prayer Nation enjoined all well-meaning citizens of the State to continue to pray for peace and unity of the country and Zamfara State.

Those in attendance during the courtesy call include the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Alh Bala Bello Maru, Chief of Staff Government House, Col Bala Mande, Sen. Lawal Hassan Dan-Iya,Speaker Zamfara State House of Assembly, Hon Nasiru Maazu Magarya and other top government officials.
