2019 Carnival Theme: Payment Of Pensions, Gratuities, Salaries; The Highest Act Of Humanity – CRFLF

The State Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade has named the theme for this year’s Calabar Carnival as ‘humanity’, charging all competing bands to see their performance as avenues to preach the message of humanity in a bid to awaken the human conscience.
Reacting to this, a civic group, Cross River Future Leaders Forum (CRFLF), said that the best avenue for the Governor to promote humanity was by payment of pensions, gratuities and salaries, especially the recently employed Secondary Education Board teachers who have been working for more than one year without salaries, describing that as the highest form of inhumanity in the history of Cross River State.
CRFLF Publicity Secretary, Comrade Benjamin Arikpo, in an exclusive chat with News men last night, opined that the Governor was wrong to have believed that carnival bands could make Cross Riverians appreciate the role of conscience in human existence, even when he has refused to conduct Local Government elections, a situation, CRFLF said, negates all segments of human conscience.
According to CRFLF, “At least three (3) Cross Riverians die every month waiting for their pensions. Most of these pensioners have their children in school. Some have nothing to hope on, except this pension. It therefore goes to say that the Governor is inhuman for refusing to pay these debts”.
CRFLF also noted that hardship in the State has reached an all-time high, courtesy of the Governor’s unwillingness to pay workers their wages. The group informed that aside the unpaid gratuities and pensions, some civil servants at the Local Government level were yet to receive their June and July, 2019 salaries. It also said that some State-level civil servants are not left out on this.
The group advised the Governor to ensure that he pays all outstandings before December, the month of the carnival, as this will add enough flavor to the party.
