PLSG Launches Nutrition 774 Initiative to Combat Malnutrition

In a bid to fight against malnutrition and poverty, the Plateau State government has inaugurated its Nutritional Council, a key component of the Federal Government's N774 initiative.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang who was represented by the Secretary to the State,Samuel Jatau, officially launched the new Nutritional Council at Government House, Rayfield to oversee nutritional activities and address malnutrition across the state, a commitment to improving public health.
This initiative is multi-sectoral and is a part of the Federal Government's wider N774 initiative, a community-based program designed to alleviate poverty across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Mutfwang launched the Nutrition 774 Initiative, emphasizing the importance of local involvement and the need to realign with the Federal Government’s updated policy directive and administrative provisions.
Athough he lamented the previous inactive engagement of the Local Government committees on food and nutrition due to weak governance and resource monitoring he reiterated the government's commitment which led to the approval in reactivating these committees in October 2023. Stating the initiative aims to promote ownership and accountability by involving local government authorities early in the process.
Championing the N774 initiative from the National Council on Nutrition is Uju Rochas Okorocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health and Focal Person, Nutrition Office of the Vice President highlighted the critical need for this initiative, calling malnutrition "Nigeria's most silent killer." She noted that malnutrition is responsible for more deaths than conflict but often receives far less media attention.
Uju said that the initiative is built on three pillars: political will, multi-sectorial collaboration, financing and accountability. Therefore, the role of Local Government chairmen and traditional leaders in leading nutrition interventions is key stating the importance of state leadership in driving systemic change and making the initiative a legacy for the administration.
To ensure the program's success, the government has approved Local Government committees to build support for the initiative at the grassroots level across all 774 Local Government Areas.
Earlier in his remarks, the Hon. Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Adams Bulus Lekshak, emphasized the importance of addressing malnutrition in Plateau State, highlighting it as a strategic imperative for economic growth and human capital development.
He outlined that the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, as the coordinating body involves various ministries and agencies to ensure optimal nutrition status for citizens.
Good will messages were received from representatives of the traditional rulers, religious leaders and the Algon Chairman, respectively.
In line with the N774 Initiative, a technical two day training course session has began which involves leaders from 17 Local Government Councils and key stakeholders to discuss the benefits of the program. A key component of the initiative in promoting local government ownership and accountability to ensure long term success and community involvement.
The program aims to mobilize resources and expertise at the local level, ensuring tailored solutions to the unique nutritional challenges faced by communities in Plateau State.
