Image
.. .Says Slain Bayelsa Youth Will Get Justice Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has implored people of the state, particularly youths, to follow due process in resolving issues rather than embarking on frivolous protests. Senator Diri gave the advice on Thursday during the 33rd State Security Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, while reacting to a protest by youths who besieged the Government House over the killing of a private cab driver, Binalayefa Asiaye, on May 27 by a policeman in Azikoro community. Governor Diri said the incident was unfortunate and that the policeman has been arrested and is undergoing trial. The Bayelsa helmsman acknowledged that while protest was a fundamental human right in a democratic setting, aggrieved persons should, however, not take the laws into their hands to infringe on the rights of others. He said: “Let me advise those who always take to protest that not everything elicits protest. In a democracy, you have a right to pro...

Mbah’s One Year of Disruptive Governance in Enugu State

Image
By Prince Ejeh Josh The process encountered a set of radical disruption which upsets the status quo. It was a remarkable departure from the established incremental governance model to one described as a paradigm shift that has no regard for norm and convention. This redefined the trajectory of governance in its broad perspective. No longer an evolution that followed a traditional trend where the system is the guiding principle rather than human ingenuity that could interrupt and rupture the process with a new set of new ideas and solutions. The Enugu’s eccentric example is worth interrogation under the leadership of Dr. Peter Mbah, the state’s governor.  From “The Innovator’s Dilemma” to “The Innovator’s Solution”, Clayton Christensen, a Harvard professor and business consultant, had posited that only businesses that could relentlessly apply new set of ideas that breaks down the complexity of business model, affording a hitherto luxury product to the reach of the basic or the gener...

Ndi Enugu, Exactly 12 months ago, I was inaugurated as your governor. In that solemn moment, I felt the weight of history as I looked around the sea of heads that swarmed the Michael Okpara Square that morning, and became even more determined to surpass the expectations that I glimpsed on your faces. I pledged wholesome service to you – the people – in my oaths of office and allegiance. This ceremony is significant because it also celebrates 25 years of unbroken democratic rule in Nigeria. I congratulate Ndi Enugu and every Nigerian for this milestone. While this long run is testament to our resilience as a people, it yet serves as a reminder that democracy should never be construed as an exclusive preserve; societies thrive when governments nurture a sense of inclusion and banish feelings of alienation. Let’s think about it: what really is democracy without the people? Without the people, democracy loses its defining ethos. You would thus recall that the first action I took barely one...
