PDP’s Douye Diri Sworn In As Bayelsa Governor

By Tony Okechukwu

Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been sworn in as the governor Bayelsa State.

Diri was sworn in alongside his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in a brief ceremony.
The Chief Justice of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri, administered the oat of office to Diri and Ewhrudjakpo during the swearing-in that was held at the Bayelsa State Government House, Yenagoa, the state capital.
Before calling the governor and the deputy governor-elect for the administration of the oath, the Chief judge said: “I Can confirm that the two persons to be sworn today have met all the conditions precedent for the administration of the oat of office.”
One of the conditions for the swearing of the governor-elect and his deputy is the declaration of their assets.
The development followed the issuance of certificates return to the PDP candidates on the orders of the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The apex court had annulled the election of David Lyon of the Peoples Democratic Party (APC) for presenting a running mate (Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo) with fake certificates to INEC ahead of the election.
The court also ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return earlier issued to Lyon and issue a fresh one to the candidate who came second with the required spread in the election.
INEC consequently met on Friday and reviewed the judgement, where it decided that PDP’s Diri should be declared winner of the poll having come second with 143, 172 votes in the election.
