Governor Fintiri Appreciates Swiss Govt On Support To Adamawa State

 ... Fintiri and Swiss Ambassador Discuss Development Priorities and Partnerships in the Education Sector

His Excellency, the Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, met with the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Nicolas Lang on Monday, November 20th, 2023 at the Embassy of Switzerland, FCT Abuja.

They had a fruitful and cordial discussion on the development priorities and partnership between Switzerland and Adamawa State, with a special focus on the education sector.

The Governor expressed his sincere appreciation to the Swiss government for its generous and consistent support of the humanitarian response in the Northeast, which has been affected by the crisis of insurgency and displacement since 2014.

He also appreciated Switzerland’s role in facilitating dialogue with various groups/stakeholders and in funding organizations such as ICRC, FAO, IOM, UNFPA/AUN, and WFP that have been delivering life-saving assistance and protection to the affected populations in Adamawa State.

The Swiss Ambassador conveyed the need to align with the State’s priorities and avoid duplication of efforts in the humanitarian and development space. He also revealed Switzerland’s diplomatic engagements behind the scenes through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region.

The Governor highlighted the State’s transition from humanitarian aid to development, emphasizing the formulation of an Action Plan through the Durable Solutions Committee and Technical Working Groups. He urged the Swiss government to support the State’s Durable Solutions Plan, which outlines the strategic vision and objectives for the recovery and development of the State and its people.

The Ambassador indicated Switzerland’s interest in prioritizing education as a key sector for development. 

He commended the State’s remarkable progress in education, ranking 2nd in the National Examination Council (NECO) in 2023 from 33rd in 2018. 

The Ambassador stressed the importance of vocational training and skills acquisition which are part of Switzerland’s educational system to address the challenges of youth unemployment.

 He shared some examples and best practices from Switzerland and other countries that have implemented similar policies and programs.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to explore avenues for enhancing investment in education infrastructure and elevating teaching standards and educational progress in Adamawa State. 

They also agreed to maintain regular communication and consultation on the development issues and opportunities in the State.
