BAUCHI GOV'T HANDS OVER PLOTS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF 2,500 HOUSES TO CONTRACTORS
Bauchi State Government has handed over plots of land to contractors for the construction 2,500 houses in the six emirates of Bauchi, Katagum, Misau, Jama'are, Ningi and Dass that will be given to poor citizens on loan.
Chairman of the Bauchi State Projects Monitoring and Evacuation Committee, Baba Muhammad Dadi, who handed over the plots to the contractors recently, asked them to commence work immediately so that they could complete the projects within the deadline as stipulated in the contract agreement.
He explained that in the first phase of the project, 500 houses will be built in Bauchi Local Government, 50 in Dass and 100 in Azare, Ningi and Jama'are, respectively.
According to him, the mandate of the committee is to monitor the execution of the projects from beginning to the end and ensure value for money.
Dadi urged the contractors to engage the services of local labourers from the host communities and patronize sellers of blocks, sands, woods and other building materials from them with a view to empowering them.
Our correspondent recalls that during the foundation-laying ceremony of the project held at Dungal village of Bauchi Local Government in February this year, Governor Bala Mohammed said that the project is in collaboration with Family Homes Funds Limited and the Federal Ministry of Finance.
He noted that the houses are coming at a period when the state’s demography has changed dramatically due to internal displacement caused by insurgency as many people within the region came to the state, hence, the need for more houses to be provided to the common man at affordable prices.
According to him, quality assurance mechanism has been established with a corresponding compliance arrangement to drive the project to effective delivery.
“I wish to reiterate that in tandem with our desire to comply with the established building codes and the best practices in basic engineering management and evaluation, I would in addition to the statutory supervision of the Ministry of Housing, establish a task force in my office for monitoring and evaluation of the projects.”
However, the district head of Miri village in Bauchi Local Government where the committee visited, Malam Hussaini Abubakar Othman, called for the prompt payment of compensation to the people of the area whose plots and farms would be used for the project.
