Gov. Wike Withdraws Charges Against Caverton Helicopters Ltd
In what appears like a truce, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the withdrawal of charges against two pilots of Caverton Helicopters and ten other passengers.
River State Governor, Nyesom Wike had stormed Caverton Helicopters office in Port Harcourt to enforce shutdown
The development was made public via a statement issued by the Rivers state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paulinus Nsirim.
In the statement released in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the Commissioner disclosed that the Rivers State Government has withdrawn and discontinued the matter.
He further disclosed that consequently, the two separate charges marked PMC/532C/2020 and PMC/533C/2020 preferred against the two pilots of Caverton Helicopters Ltd. and the 10 passengers on board, respectively, have been struck out by the Chief Magistrate.
The presiding Chief Magistrate in charge, D.D. Ihua-Maduenyi, has also discharged all the defendants.
Recall that two pilots of Caverton Helicopters, alongside ten passengers on board the aircraft were arrested in April by the State Taskforce on COVID-19. Their arrest were hinged on the violation of the executive order restricting movement into the state.
The two pilots and the ten passengers were subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt.
The court presided over by Justice Ihua-Maduenyi ruled that the accused persons should be quarantined for 14 days.
The matter generated a lot of furore between Gov. Wike and the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who was said to have granted a special permission to Caverton Helicopters despite the ban on local and international flights.
It is believed that the decision of the affected parties to resolve the conflict out of court was responsible for the withdrawal of the case by the Rivers State Government.
