Cross River Agriculture: State Govt. Graduates 450 APPEALS Project Trainees - Report
No Fewer than 450 beneficiaries of the World Bank-assisted Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) have graduated after completing their training in Cross River State.
The project aimed at accessing grants for agricultural investment aimed at boosting employment rate in the state is targeting 1,700 citizens of Cross River to be given the World bank assisted project's grants.
Governor Ben Ayade, while speaking during the graduation of Women And Youth Empowerment Program (WYEP) at the state owned Songhai farms, Itigidi in Abi Local Government Area of the state, charged the graduating trainees to be productive.
Ayade who was represented by the Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the implementing ministry, Ntufam Okon Owuna, told the beneficiaries to take advantage of the grant, by focusing on viable investment plans approved for them during their training that will not only make them self dependent but also turn them to Green Millionaires and employers of labour.
In her remarks, the Commissioner, Minstry of International Development Cooperation (MIDC), the coordinating ministry for the project, Dr. Inyang Asibong, said the main thrust of the project was to increase productivity, improve processing and marketing of the target value-chains, which would foster job creation along the identified value chains.
Asibong explained that one of the primary objectives of the APPEALS project was food security and employment generation, which she said was in line with the policy of Governor Ben Ayade's administration.
The National Task Team Lead - APPEALS, Dr. Mohammed Sani Jobdi, lauded Cross River State for ensuring the state benefitted from the project and provided the needed counterpart fund which has further shown that truly, Governor Ayade is the chief farmer of the state.
Presenting the beneficiaries to the governor for collection of certificates, the State Program Coordinator (SPC), APPEALS, Dr. Marcel Agim, thanked the beneficiaries for their professionalism during the training thereby becoming major contributors to the food production and supply chains in Cross River.
Governor Ayade's representative attended the closing ceremony with the representatives of the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu; representative of Speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng Williams; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Rev. Joseph Ugbe and that of MIDC, Felix Ekpeyong, as well as staff from the National Project Office.
