Taraba Gov Organizes Two-Day Conference for Council Chairmen
A two-day capacity building conference on accountability and good governance has been organized by the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for local government council officials and stakeholders in Taraba State.
Upon opening the Conference, the Governor remarked that the gathering was a continuation of a workshop held the preceding year, stressing its function as a call to duty and a period of reflection on the complexities and accountability inherent in leadership.
He stated that government policies and programmes ought to be implemented in a manner that enhances the overall well-being of the people.
According to him, his administration has taken a bold step to ensure governance is felt state-wide, and this is why he initiated free and compulsory education to ensure every child has access to education.
The council Chairmen were urged to support the initiative and ensure its success in their areas. Rebuilding schools statewide is set to commence, with a committee to be established.
Dr. Agbu Kefas noted that his government is investing in healthcare to establish active healthcare centers in all wards.
"Leadership at the grassroots is not a privilege for accumulating wealth but a responsibility that must be taken seriously."
He is enhancing state security through local initiatives like Taraba Marshall and intelligent networks, while promoting accountability and transparency among local leaders.
According to the Governor, governance is not self-serving; instead, it involves utilizing public resources to provide public goods, and leadership is about problem-solving, not wielding power.
To the traditional rulers, he told them that as a custodian of culture and community peace, they must sit up and guard against indiscriminate sales of lands.
The MD and CEO of Euclase Resources Limited, the firm handling the workshop, Major General Henry Ayamasaowei (Ret'd), gave an overview of the conference and said it will evaluate the performance of local government areas and assess the journey thus far.
The workshop will position the local government to operate competitively, he stated.
He also lauded the governor for considering capacity building as a means of boosting productivity in public service.
The permanent Secretary bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dame said the conference will bridge the governance gap and promote practices of good governance.
