WHO Applauds Enugu Govt’s Healthcare Innovations, Says Enugu East Council Boss Most Pro-Health Chairman

The World Health Organization (WHO) has commended Enugu State Government for its outstanding leadership in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) even as it declared the Executive Chairman of Enugu East Council, Engr. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, the most Pro-Health Chairman in the state.

The commendation was given during the official flag-off of the Enugu East Health Insurance Scheme at the Enugu Type-Two Primary Health Care Center in Emene at the weekend.

The WHO South-East Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, highlighted the initiative as a groundbreaking model, which marked the first time a council chairman in Nigeria had committed substantial resources toward community-wide healthcare access.

Commending the chairman, Igboekwu emphasized that Enugu East’s proactive approach aligns with global best practices, strengthening health security and enhancing economic growth through a healthier workforce.

He further applauded Enugu State’s strategic healthcare reforms which aimed at repositioning the state as a front-runner in the drive for Universal Health Coverage.

During his remarks, Engr. Anike disclosed that the newly launched scheme will enroll 5,000 elderly residents—both indigenes and non-indigenes from the age of 60 years and above—into the State Universal Health Coverage programme.

He stressed that the initiative would run from April 1, 2025, to April 1, 2026, in order to guarantee free healthcare services for the beneficiaries.

While expressing gratitude to the State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, for spearheading a wave of disruptive innovations across multiple sectors, particularly in healthcare, Anike reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to aligning with the state government’s vision to achieve a healthy workforce that would lead to a healthy economy.

“When you have a Governor delivering over a thousand projects concurrently, you must take steps to keep up with his momentum,” he added.

As part of the commitment to aligning with the state’s strategy on health, the chairman announced that his administration had already commenced the construction of Type-One Primary Healthcare Centers in Neke-Uno and Obinagu Nike communities, with approval secured for three additional centers across the council.

On her part, the Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, described the initiative as a monumental achievement, saying that its life-changing impact on the elderly population would help them maintain a healthy living.

Similarly, Dr. Edith Okolo, Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Health Insurance Scheme, lauded the project as a historic milestone that would redefine health insurance in the state.

The event also had in attendance notable dignitaries, including the Member Representing Enugu East Rural Constituency, Hon. Raymond Ugwu; the Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Felix Nnamani; the Chairman of the Nigerian, Dr Sunday Okafor, the Enugu East PDP chairman, Hon. Okey Igbokwe, among others.
