When Executive Lawyers, Big and Small Wigs Storm Garden City

Monday morning till afternoon, Rivers state Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, himself a lawyer, hosted two of his counterparts: Govs Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto and Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau state, both of whom are also lawyers; and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) executives and members at the association’s 2021 annual general conference held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital.

With focus on the wigs ‘taking the lead’ in different spheres of life, the pace for this undertaking was set for participants at the three days event by Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili, who represented the Chief Justice of the Federation, Gov. Wike and Most Rev. Dr Matthew Hassan-Kukah, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Nigeria. The emphasis was on ‘a conversation on leadership and followership.’

The theme of the conference: ‘Taking the Lead’, notes the organizers, “aims to forge a mould, which will shape subsequent generations of the Nigerian Bar and more importantly reposition the legal profession to play… critical role of Taking the Lead… as an instrument of social engineering and a catalyst for national development.”

The lawyers, going forward, want “to shift from an approach of being reactive to being proactive and where necessary, to challenge the status quo, speak truth to power and advocate for a better society.”

They also want to “assume responsibility for preferring solutions and… take the lead in implementing… solutions.”

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, representatives of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Attorney General of the Federation/Minister for Justice.
Other high profile attendees include: former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former Attorney General of the Federation/Minister for Justice, Muhammad Bello Adoke (SAN) and former Governor of Rivers state, Celestine Omeiha among many others.
