Enugu Celebrates 33 Years of Statehood with Pride and Reflection

Enugu State marked its 33rd anniversary with a celebration that honored its rich history and underscored its significant role in Nigeria's development. In a commemorative address, His Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, congratulated the people of Enugu, known as Ndi Enugu, and encouraged them to take pride in the state's long and illustrious journey.

While Enugu may be commemorating 33 years as a formal state, Governor Mbah emphasized that its history stretches much further back, deeply intertwined with Nigeria’s evolution. "The discovery of coal in Enugu in 1909 was a pivotal moment for the Southern and Northern Protectorates, shaping the region’s economic and cultural landscape," he noted.

Governor Mbah took the opportunity to honor the state’s founding fathers, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to the creation of Enugu. "We honor their steadfast commitment—not just in words, but through our bold actions aimed at establishing a new socio-economic order consistent with the dreams that birthed Enugu State," he said.

Reflecting on the past, he also paid tribute to the forebears whose labor in the coal mines significantly contributed to the wealth that propelled Nigeria's development. "Let us be inspired by their resilience and sacrifice," he urged.

Looking ahead, Governor Mbah reminded the citizens of the upcoming 115th anniversary of Enugu as a center of history, commerce, and administration. He encouraged them to view this milestone not as a mere symbol but as a reminder of the state's responsibility to deliver people-centered governance. "Today serves as yet another reminder that we carry the weight of history and the people’s expectations, which can only be lessened through the sustained delivery of governance that centers around the people," he stated.

He outlined his vision for the future of Enugu State, aspiring to make it a premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and a place where basic utilities are reliable. "We are actually ticking all the boxes—from public water supply to quality public education and expanding the primary healthcare system," he highlighted.

Governor Mbah concluded on an optimistic note, asserting that the dreams of Enugu’s founding fathers are alive and being realized. "Let optimism blossom where cynicism once reigned, for we are on the cusp of a renaissance," he declared.

As Enugu State celebrates its 33rd anniversary, the sentiment is one of pride, reflection, and a renewed commitment to the ideals that have shaped its journey. "Happy 33rd anniversary, Ndi Enugu," Governor Mbah concluded.
