BREAKING: Supreme Court Confirms Diri’s Election as Bayelsa Governor
...rejects APC and Sylvia's appeal
The Supreme Court has confirmed Senator Douye Diri as the legitimate governor of Bayelsa State.
In a ruling delivered on Friday, the court dismissed the appeal filed by Timipre Sylvia, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 11 Bayelsa governorship election, challenging Diri’s victory.
Justice Garba Lawal, delivering the lead judgment, stated that Sylvia's appeal, along with that of the APC, was not only without merit but also constituted a gross abuse of the judicial process.
The Supreme Court's unanimous decision reinforced the earlier judgments of both the Court of Appeal and the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had previously upheld Diri’s election.
Earlier, on July 18, 2024, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had unanimously supported the Tribunal's decision to uphold Governor Douye Diri's re-election from November 11, 2023.
A three-member panel from the appellate court dismissed the appeal by Timipre Sylva and his party, which sought to overturn the Tribunal's ruling.
On May 27, the Justice Adekunle Adeleye-led tribunal had dismissed the petition filed by the APC and its candidate against Governor Diri’s re-election, citing a lack of merit.
The tribunal concluded that neither Sylvia nor the APC provided credible evidence to support any of their allegations regarding the governorship election's outcome.
