PDP Governors’ Forum Convenes in Jalingo, Calls for Accountability and Fair Governance

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum convened its fourth meeting of the year at the Government House in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Friday, August 23, 2024. The meeting, attended by PDP governors from across the country, focused on a range of issues affecting both their states and the nation, culminating in the issuance of a detailed communique.

The Governors expressed relief over the conclusion of the #EndBadGovernance protests, which had been teetering on the brink of a national crisis. The Forum lauded the PDP Governors for their adept handling of the protests within their states, highlighting their ability to prevent the demonstrations from being overtaken by hoodlums and other disruptive elements. The Forum reiterated the importance of peaceful protests as a fundamental right of citizens and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The Governors also urged the Federal Government to ensure that those arrested during the protests receive a fair and speedy trial.

The Forum voiced strong criticism of the Federal Government's approach to economic and social policies, accusing it of using blackmail tactics instead of reviewing policies to make them more compassionate and effective. The Governors called on President Tinubu to demonstrate statesmanship by curbing his officials' tendencies to engage in blame games that unfairly target state governments. They underscored their commitment to standing with the Nigerian people, particularly those suffering under current economic conditions, and pledged to take all necessary steps to alleviate their hardships.

Addressing the ongoing political impasse in Rivers State, where court rulings have been used to influence party congress outcomes, the Forum reaffirmed its support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Governors announced plans to engage with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP to address the irregularities observed during the congresses and ensure that Governor Fubara assumes his rightful leadership position within the state party structure.

The Forum also raised concerns about the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, condemning statements made by the President that they believe indicate a plan to compromise the election in favor of his party. The Governors criticized the reported systematic intimidation of PDP supporters by the Nigerian Police and called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that his officers maintain neutrality and uphold democratic principles during the election.

Another significant issue discussed at the meeting was the Federal Government’s handling of national revenues. The Forum expressed concern over the lack of distinction between the Federal Government of Nigeria's revenue and that of the Federation, which, by law, should be allocated according to existing regulations. The Governors called on the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation to adhere strictly to constitutional mandates, specifically Section 162 of the Nigerian Constitution. They also advocated for the separation of the roles of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Accountant General of the Federal Government to ensure greater transparency and accountability.

In conclusion, the Forum commended Governor Agbu Kefas and the government of Taraba State for their hospitality in hosting the meeting. The Governors praised the strides made by the Taraba State government in delivering the dividends of democracy to its citizens, aligning with the PDP’s governance philosophy.

The PDP Governors’ Forum continues to assert its role as a significant political force in Nigeria, advocating for fair governance, transparency, and the protection of citizens' rights.
