VP Osinbajo, Senate President, Gov. Tambuwal, Counterparts, Emirs Storm Emir of Kano Coronation

Kano city was agog with festivity as the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state lined up behind their host, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as he formally declared Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Fulani Emir of Kano; and the 59th of such in the line of succession to the coveted legendary throne.

Emir Bayero succeeded his late father who ascended the throne 58 years ago and died on 

6 June 2014, after more than half a century on the throne.


Vice President Osinbajo represented his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari, whose Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, himself a maternal uncle of the new Emir, was also at the occasion.

The President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum sent a high powered delegation led by the Governor of Damagaram, just as similar representatives came from Cameroon, Chad, South Africa, Sudan and other parts of Africa and the world.


Other state governors at the August gathering which took place on Saturday at the Sani Abacha stadium in Kano, were the governors of  Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Lagos and Zamfara states. The Deputy Governor of Yobe state, Idi Barde Gubana represented his Governor.

Ministers of the Federal Republic at the function were those of Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, Sports and Youths Development, Sunday Dare, Niger Delta, Obong Godswill Akpabio and Agriculture, Alhaji Sani Nanono. The Ministers of Defence, Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi, Water Resources, Alhaji Suleiman Hussein Adamu, Aviation, Alhaji Hadi Sirika and the Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity to the President), Mal. Garba Shehu were also present.


The Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, an indigene of Kano state, was also present at the enthronement.


Equally, prominent first class monarchs and others across the country led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar witnessed the star-studded crowning of Emir Bayero. These kings include the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, Oba Ewuare II of Benin and the Tor Tiv V, Begha u Tiv, Orcivirigh Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse.  The emirs of Jema'a, Kagara, Fika, Bade and Talata Mafara, graced the occasion.

Kano-born business moguls, Alhaji Aminu Dantata and Aliko Dangote were not left out among a host of religious leaders, diplomats and politicians.


The colorful occasion, punctuated by royal artillery gun shots, ululations and the imperial tunes of the Kakaki, featured the presentation of the following royal insignia: a bow and arrow, sword, hat, staff of office (a double edged spear), royal hood, knife and a copy of the Holy Qur'an to the emir. Later in the day, a durbar procession was held after the guests have departed. 

Both events were preceded by a Coronation Lecture and dinner on Thursday and Friday respectively. On Monday, the new Emir will embark on Hawan Gari (inner city mini durbar) to show appreciation to his subjects.
